This may or may not come to a surprise to many, but two leaders that are pro-Vladimir Putin have won their reelections. One of them is Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary; And the other is Aleksandar Vucic, the Prime Minister of Serbia.

Many leaders around the world have frowned upon Russia’s attack on the Ukraine. However, the recent election victories in Hungary and Serbia suggest that there may be a few Europeans who back political leaders that have a close relationship with Russia.

Viktor Orban’s party, the Fidesz party, ended up winning two-thirds of Parliament’s majority. The victory means Viktor Orban has secured a fourth term. Meanwhile, Aleksandar Vucic secured his victory with nearly 60 percent of the vote. This means he will enter into his fifth term as the leader of Serbia.

Some believe that the leaders won in part due to the conflict between Russia and the Ukraine. In fact, it’s safe to say that Russia played a central role in both Serbia’s election and Hungary’s election.

As for what’s next for the leaders, only time will tell. One thing is almost certain, and that is both Serbia’s PM and Hungary’s PM will continue to through their support behind Russia, regardless of the fact that Orban showed resistance in supporting some sanctions that Europe has placed against Russia.
